Afeni Shakur, activist and mother of legendary rapper Tupac Shakur passed away at a hospital near her home in Sausalito, California Tuesday night.

Shakur is best known as the subject as one of her son’s most famous songs as well as for her efforts to preserve his legacy after his untimely death in 1996. Throughout her life she was an activist philanthropist and supporter of African-American causes and organizations.

Shakur gave birth to her son in 1971, one month after being acquitted on all charges related to a 1969 conspiracy to bomb multiple landmarks in New York City, as a member of the Black Panther Party.

In 2014, Shakur co-produced Holler If Ya Hear Me, a Broadway musical starring poet and wordsmith Saul Williams, which feature her son’s works.

Last fall, All Eyez on Me a movie about the Tupac’s life was announced, with Danai Gurira cast to play Afeni Shakur. Shakur also served as an executive producer for the project.

Shakur is survived a daughter, Sekyiwa Shakur.
