Am I Not A Mother? Zimbabwean Women Share their Experiences of Post Natal Depression.

Hona Africa

In this short documentary produced by Hona Africa, Zimbabwean women share their experiences of Post Natal Depression (PND). Though they are speaking anonymously, they are also speaking from the heart, conveying very real feelings of fear, confusion and alienation.

While 85% of women will experience some degree of despondency in the days after having given birth, PND is a deeper and longer lasting form of depression that effects approximately 10%-15% of women. According to a study by the University of Iowa published in the journal Social Psychiatry and Psychiatric Epidemiology, women who are already experiencing copious amounts of stress in their lives due to factors such as poverty, are more likely to experience Post Natal Depression.
