Butler first became interested in quilting after creating a quilt for her ailing grandmother. Soon after, she sharpened the sewing skills she was taught as a young girl, and utilized her fine art education to create beautiful, intricate, quilts which depicted aspects of African-American life.

Butler’s works have been featured in exhibitions all over the country, including The Smithsonian, the California African American Museum in Los Angeles, and The Studio Museum in Harlem.

In some of her latest works Butler pays homage to Sandra Bland, Lauryn Hill, and Nina Simone, and also celebrates black beauty.
