Early last week, we shared that Selma director Ava DuVernay might be directing one of Marvel’s next big superhero feature films, but now it looks like Dope filmmaker Rick Famuyiwa is also in the running.

Fans and insiders speculated that DuVernay is most likely being considered for the upcoming Black Panther feature which will star Chadwick Boseman and is slated for a 2018 release. Captain Marvel is also another possibility for the indie director.

According to Rope of Silicon, however, Dope director Rick Famuyiwa is also a possibility for the Black Panther feature.

[…] ex-Latino-Review.com scooper El Mayimbe reports (via Twitter) that Rick Famuyiwa, director of the Sundance hit Dope, may also be a contender for the Black Panther gig. His is a name that sounds far more plausible as this seems to be the new blockbuster model — cherry pick an indie director hot off their first big success, bully them around, make millions, move on.

Famuyiwa has been getting some serious buzz over his critically acclaimed film Dope, the film was even at the center of a bidding war over distribution rights early in the film festival season.

Both DuVernay and Famuyiwa could lend some interesting artistic perspectives to the films of the Marvel Universe.

Dope, which opens the 19th American Black Film Festival in New York City next month, hits theaters on June 19th.
