Just one month after meeting President Obama, Emma Didlake, America’s oldest known living veteran, has passed away at the age of 110.

Didilake, a housewife, joined the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps in 1943.

During her White House visit last month, the president praised her for her service and for breaking barriers as an African-American woman.

We are so grateful that she is here with us today. And it’s a great reminder of not only the sacrifices that the Greatest Generation made on our behalf, but also the kind of trailblazing that our women veterans made, African American veterans who helped to integrate our Armed Services. We are very, very proud of them. That’s why we got to make sure we do right by them.

Following the death of Emma Didlake, Richard Overton, a native of Bastrop County in Texas who is also African-American, is now the oldest living veteran in the United States.
