Listen To This: Good Tunes From The Brits

Michael Kiwanuka, Brit Soul Singers

The surplus of diverse soulful singers being sent across the pond from England feels like an unexpected yet welcomed treat. There’s the original don “Smooth Operator” crooner Sade–who sort of paved the way for singers that followed. In recent years, artists the likes of Corinne Bailey Rae, Emeli Sandé, Estelle, Laura Mvula, Lianne La Havas and Michael Kiwanuka are drawing attention to British soul. The latter aforementioned artist, Kiwanuka, caught my eye late one night while channel surfing a month ago.

He performed an unforgettable set alongside Emeli Sandé on PBS’s Austin City Limits. Michael’s soulful sound differs greatly from the ladies mentioned above. He emits a folksy blues cry–his music almost always being accompanied by a delicate acoustic guitar. Although a different sound, the Brit’s music “satisfies the soul” nonetheless. Check out Kiwanuka and be sure to add him to your musical repertoire.
