Firelei Báez is a Dominican-born artist of Haitian and Dominican ancestry. She immigrated to the United States at the age of 9, studied art at Cooper Union, and currently lives and works in New York City. Much of her works explore her identity as an Afro-Latina through the incorporation of nature, fantasy, and Caribbean folklore.
Her collection of works, titled the “Natural Grooming Series” was inspired by her own transition to natural hair. Báez collaborated with several woman via natural hair forums to create the portraits.
