Ojo Agi Illustrations, Black Women Art

Ojo Agi is a Canadian-born artist of Nigerian descent. Her striking illustrative portraits depict beautiful, pensive figures. Her latest series “Daughters of the Diaspora” is a meeting of different cultural ideas of womanhood. Agi writes about her past illustration series,

Each illustration tells a personal story for me, and collectively they demonstrate the sensitive side of people of colour that’s not often acknowledged by mainstream society.

We are subject to numerous negative stereotypes, that limit our full range of desires, prospects, and emotions, leading to damaging effects on our social interactions and mental health.

We tend to combat the negatives (like “sassy” and “ghetto”) with words like “strong” and “resilient” forgetting that there is also a sensitive side to all of us.
