Buenaventura, Colombia is a coastal city with just under 400,000 residents. Approximately 85% of the residents are of African descent. While Buenaventura is a beautiful city with a rich cultural heritage it is most known for its high rates of violence and as a major stop in Colombia’s drug trade. On March 12th, business and community leaders in Buenaventura, many of them women, organized a strike to fight extortion which is connected with organized crime in the city.
