In this TED Talk, Rhon Manigault-Bryant, an assistant professor of Africana studies at Williams College illustrates the ways that black women’s bodies have been consumed in the public sphere without their consent. She then ties this history to the work of contemporary sci-fi writer Octavia Butler, a writer whose feature black women characters existing in an otherworldly setting with agency over their bodies. Manigault-Bryant closes with a hashtag, a call to spread her ideas via social media.
