Buttons are more than a functional item. They are a fashion staple, an embellishment, and an artistic medium.
“The Button Show,” the latest exhibition at New York’s Rush Arts Gallery brings together a group of artists and designers who have used buttons as an interesting alternative medium. The exhibition, which is curated by Peter “Souleo” Wright, features Beau McCall and Amalia K. Amaki. McCall is a fashion designer, artist, and staple on the New York City social scene often photographed in his unique creations. Buttons have featured prominently in his work throughout his career.
“What I tried to do with this show was look at artists who were elevating that level of craft and making polished, well-executed works that can stand next to a painting … because of the amount of detail and precision in the work,” says Souleo.
