The film “Belle” has already garnered well deserved buzz amongst the international film festival crowd. The film is based on the true to life story of Dido Elizabeth Belle, the illegitimate mixed race daughter of a high ranked Naval officer. Belle’s upbringing amongst aristocrats affords her some privilege and power (aiding in convincing a powerful official in ending slavery) yet she isn’t completely shielded from discrimination. The conflict makes for a fascinating plot. Go and support the film, it stars a black actress (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) as well as a black director (Amma Asante).
