The shooting of Shaneka Thompson, a 29 year-old Veteran Affairs Officer, was the first act of violence in a short-lived rampage carried out by Ismaaiyl Brinsley. Brinsley shot Thompson in the stomach at 5:45 am at her apartment in Owing Mills, Maryland, a suburb of Baltimore. After the attack, Brinsley stole Shaneka’s cell phone, which police used to track him en route to New York City. Reports on Saturday initially stated that Thompson had died from her injuries, but her grandfather says that though she can’t yet speak, she is expected to make a full recovery. Thompson is currently staying at an unidentified hospital, and is described as being in critical, but stable condition.
Brinsley is said to have barged into his former girlfriend’s home with a key he was no longer supposed to have which in turn led to them arguing before he popped her. Curiously he would call the woman’s mother telling her what he had just done before fleeing… another friend would tell that he only ever loved Thompson.
