In an honest and heartfelt post to her Instagram page, top model Ajak Deng announced that she would be leaving the fashion industry and moving back to Australia.
“I am happy to announce that I am officially done with the fashion industry, I will be moving back to Australia In order to live the life that I fully deserved,” Deng wrote.
Deng who was born in South Sudan, fled the country with her family at the age of 12. In 2012 her family settled in Melbourne, Australia. After walking local shows in Australia in 2010, during the Fall/Winter 2011 season, her career took off. Deng booked 20 shows, including Lanvin, Givenchy, Jean Paul Gaultier and Chloe.
Since then Deng has racked up an impressive list of credits, from appearing in ads for Barneys and Louis Vuitton, to featuring in spreads for Vogue.
Fans are already lamenting the loss of Deng as one of the industry’s few prominent models with a darker complexion. The model has also received an outpouring of well-wishers.
