In 2009 Doreetha Daniels, now 99, first entered the College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita, California. Daniels, who was inspired to go to college by her grandkids, occasionally struggled with computer literacy and sometimes worked with tutors multiple times a week. She even suffered multiple strokes and, at one point, lost her driver’s license.

Despite all of these challenges, the Daniels persevered and attended her graduation ceremony this past Friday.

“99, here I am,” she said at the podium, garnering cheers from the audience Friday.

A press release for the college touts Daniels as “one of the most dedicated and hardworking students.”

The super senior also had some advice for younger generations: “Don’t give up. Do it. Don’t let anybody discourage you. Say that, ‘I’m going to do it,’ and do it for yourself.”
