Nigerian American artist Dawn Okoro takes on racialized misogyny in her latest series “Misogynoir/Resistance.” Misogynoir is a term coined by black queer feminist scholar Moya Bailey and popularized by writer Trudy of Gradient Lair.
Misogynoir is often examined through the lens of popular culture and how black women are depicted in popular media. Okoro was inspired by “video girls” to create “Misogynoir/Resistance,” which features subjects holding powerful stances or being partially obscured.
