Film. 70’s Nostalgia Through the Eyes of First-Generation Black Europeans.

Caleb Femi, Black Filmmakers

The 70’s was a unique moment in time for people of African descent living in the West. The rise of the black power movement with the coupled appreciation for the beauty of black people fostered a new sense of pride that influenced the art of music of black creatives.

Immigration and Pan-Africanism, as well as the burgeoning genre of Hip-hop meant that house parties in black homes throughout the United States and Europe were filled filled with an eclectic mix of funk, soul, Afrobeat, and urban sounds.

For black Europeans who came of age in the 80’s and 90’s, the sounds of the 70’s are looked upon with a degree of love, nostalgia, and consciousness.

In What Did Love Taste Like In The 70s?, filmmaker and poet Caleb Femi asks the young people today how the 70’s helped shape their identities as black people.
