Vanity Fair recently shared this exclusive set of photos by Annie Leibovitz from the set of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The series of images reveals quite a bit about some of the characters in the highly-anticipated upcoming film. Nyong’o’s character, Maz Kanata, will be a motion-capture/CGI character. The scanning dots pictured above will give the character her mannerisms and facial expressions. The Oscar-winner will also be providing the voice for Maz Kanata.

There are no images of Maz Kanata’s final form yet, but we do know that the character is a pirate, who lives in a castle and hangs out with other pirates, aliens, and outcasts.

Rumor has it that Maz Kanata appears very briefly in the latest trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. We see an alien hand, which many fans have speculated might be her, handing off Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber (check it out at around 00:52).
