Former Cheerleader And Honors Student Who Tried to Join ISIS Sentenced to 12 Years in Prison.

Jaelyn Delshaun Young

Last August, twenty-year-old Jaelyn Delshaun Young and her fiancé 22-year-old Muhammad Oda Dakhlalla were arrested while trying to board a flight to Turkey from Columbus, Mississippi. The pair had purchased their plane tickets using a credit card that they had stolen from Young’s mother.

According to published reports, Young and Dakhlalla planned to pretend to honeymoon in Turkey, before boarding a bus to Syria, where they would join ISIS fighters. Their plan was thwarted when it turned out that the young lovers had actually been communicating and making plans with FBI agents posing as ISIS operatives.

“I found the contacts, made arrangements, planned the departure,” Young wrote in a farewell letter to her family. “I am guilty of what you soon will find out.”

Young, a former cheerleader, honors student, and homecoming maid is the daughter of school administrator and a police officer who served in the Navy Reserve. She displayed her conversion to Islam in March of 2015 when she began wearing a burqa and soon distanced herself from her family. In May of 2015, she started researching how to travel to Syria.

Last week, Young, who pleaded guilty in March to one count of conspiring to provide material support to a terrorist organization, was sentenced to 12 years in prison. She had been faced with up to a 20 year sentence.

Dakhlalla is set to be sentenced on August 24th.
