Lagos, Nigeria-based photographer Medina Dugger honors the iconic work of Nigerian photographer J. D. ‘Okhai Ojeikere with her ongoing series “Chroma.”
Ojeikere, who passed away in 2014 after a lengthy career is best known for his black and white portraits featuring various black hair styles. He is estimated to have photographed over 1,000 different looks.
Chroma: An Ode to J.D. Okhai Ojeikere, is a celebration of traditional and contemporary braiding methods. The series takes more of a conceptual approach to Ojeikere’s documentary style and recontextualizes some of Ojeikere’s (and other) hairstyles to highlight current and imagined hair designs, celebrating the art of Nigerian hair culture.
