On Saturday, November 2nd, 2013, at 4:30 19-year-old Renisha McBride pounded on the door of Dearborn, Michigan resident Theodore Wafer, seeking help after a car accident. Wafer, scared at the possible threat of a break-in, opted to murder McBride by shooting her in the head through his screen door, rather than simply calling 911. Wafer was not arrested following the incident, he instead turned himself two weeks later on November 15th, at his arraignment. He was charged with second-degree murder, possession of a felony firearm, and manslaughter.

While the death of Renisha McBride has outrage her community, this case hasn’t gotten nearly the level of national attention it deserves. Her level of intoxication at her time of death is being used to make her less of a victim, a mode of thought that actually victimizes Renisha and all young black woman by dehumanizing them.

It’s important to remember Renisha. Too often black female victims of racial violence are forgotten. No one deserves to die for making a poor choice.
