While Janine ‘Jah9’ Cunningham got her musical start singing in the church choir of her rural hometown of Trelawny, Jamaica, it was her family’s eventual move to Kingston that introduced the budding artist to spoken word via the city’s underground poetry scene, and inspired her to write songs.
Influenced by a plethora of artists, ranging from Billie Holiday to Sizzla Kalonji, Jah9, a preacher’s daughter, has a unique sound that blends genres, and is deeply spiritual and political, and at the same time, playful.
