In a series of tweets over the weekend, musician Mykki Blanco has revealed that she is taking a short break from music to focus on investigative journalism. Her research will focus on “homosexuality and writing/ documenting gay culture in remote corners of the world.”

The artist also revealed she will be traveling to Nepal in May to learn about LGBTQ rights and how homosexuality is viewed in Nepalese society. The crux of her research will be centered around the “third gender” group referred to as “Meti” in South Asian/Hindu cultures.

Blanco credits the music industry for opening up platforms for her to share writings and research, also stating that she isn’t “quitting music” or entertainment per se but beginning to follow another passion that I will no longer sit on the back burner…”

Blanco, who gained popularity for her outspoken perspective on urban LGBTQ cultures and for her gender-bending aesthetic, has often spoken of looking “beyond gender” in the past and has questions gender binary in her music. She spoke, at length, of her new endeavor on Facebook.
