On Being a Black Woman In Black Metal.

Militia Vox, Black Female Rockers, Black Women Heavy Metal

In this segment by Global News, we meet musician Militia Vox and writer and photographer Laina Dawes.

Militia Vox is one lady who seriously rocks, and her big, soulful, voice seems right at home in a heavy metal song. Despite all her talent, Vox has seen little in the way of mainstream recognition, as the powers that be in the music industry see her as “too black” but at the same time “not black enough”. She also has become accustomed to rarely seeing women that look like her in the Heavy Metal scene. Enter Laina Dawes.

Laina Dawes, Black Metal

Dawes is a writer and journalist who has been covering and photographing heavy metal bands for years. As the black adoptee of a white couple, growing up in a completely white neighborhood, Dawes used Metal as an outlet for her frustrations and marginalized feelings, even state the genre of music “saved her life”. Dawes is also the author of What Are You Doing Here?: A Black Woman’s Life and Liberation in Heavy Metal. Watch the entire interview, it’s both intriguing and emotional:
