People You Should Know. Elizabeth Nyamayaro. The Woman Behind Emma Watson’s Viral UN Speech.

Elizabeth Nyamayaro

When actress Emma Watson delivered a rousing speech at the United Nations earlier this fall, footage of the speech went viral, sparking many conversations about what the speech meant and, also what it was lacking.

Watson had been recruited, along with a host of other influential people, by Elizabeth Nyamayaro. In addition to holding down the post of Senior Advisor to Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, the Executive Director of UN Women, Nyamayaro also heads HeForShe campaign. The campaign is aimed at promoting gender equality all over the world. Nyamayaro describes the campaign as an initiative aimed at raising awareness. In a recent interview with Fortune, she stated,

The campaign took us by surprise. Initially we were asking the question, ‘Do men care about gender equality?’ and we found out that they do care. Then we started to get a lot of emails from men who signed up, who now want to do more. Men in Nigeria wrote us about what they could do to help find the missing girls. A man in Norway emailed us wanting to know what he could do about the woman who was raped in an Uber in India. Now we are working with McKinsey for a strategy about the other areas of the campaign. We have HeForShe as an awareness platform, but now we are moving to make it an advocacy platform to change public policy and the law.

Nyamayaro also says the HeForShe campaign focuses on corporations, with an advisory board made up of executives from some of the world’s largest corporations.
