via a press release:

Fashion enthusiast, Sophia O., 24, curated the line of 8 styles. As a Nigerian native, and full time Broadcast Journalist in the United States, she’s passionate about finding ways to balance both cultures. She’s trained under Celebrity Fashion Stylist Olori SWANK, and the creators of the upcoming e-commerce site OXOSI. All these experiences have given her the knowledge and courage to launch Besida.

“The goal of Besida is to provide shoppers worldwide with unique styles, while also stimulating Nigeria’s economy,” says Sophia O. ‘Africa’s Giant’ has become dependent on oil. According to OPEC, over 90% of the country’s total export revenue comes from petroleum. Besida is the beginning of a future of clothing exports. The tailors in Nigeria are known as the ‘free cutters,” never needing a pattern to sew. This is a resource worth digging into, not only by Nigerians, but customers worldwide. Besida wants to bring that treasure to all corners of the earth.”

The name Besida is a female name from the Itsekiri tribe meaning ‘destiny determines all.’ Sophia O. has given the 8 premiere garments playful names familiar to Nigerians. For example The “Shakara Skirt” which is Besida’s twist on the maxi skirt. Shakara is a slang term meaning showing off. It fits the skirt well because that’s exactly the attitude one feels with the style on.
