Directed by Ben Rivers and Ben Russell,A Spell To Ward Off The Darkness stars Robert A.A. Lowe as an unnamed character embarking on a personal journey, both physically and emotionally. Lowe, a musician and artist, is best known as Lichens, half of the duo Lichens and Om. His unique brand of ambient, driving music, and transcendent performances, have kept audiences enthralled all over the world. He has also contributed vocals for black metal and death metal groups in Europe.
A Spell To Ward Off The Darkness is described both a work on fiction and non-fiction, a documentary and a film, here’s a synopsis,
A SPELL follows an unnamed character through three seemingly disparate moments in his life. With little explanation, we join him in the midst of a 15-person collective on a small Estonian island; in isolation in the majestic wilderness of Northern Finland; and during a concert as the singer and guitarist of a black met al band in Norway.
Marked by loneliness, ecstatic beauty and an optimism of the darkest sort, A SPELL is a radical proposition for the existence of utopia in the present.
