I’m still reeling from the news of Prince’s passing. There truly are no words to describe the scope and scale of his impact.
As an artist and innovator, Prince was celebrated all over the world. But, his work held special meaning to African-Americans. In 2010, he was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the BET Awards. The presentation came with a mini documentary and a star-studded tribute featuring Janelle Monáe, Alicia Keys, Esperanza Spalding and Patti Labelle. Each artist laid down a killer cover of some of Prince’s best known hits — a fitting celebration as Prince often elevated and promoted women artists in his performances.
I got a flashback of how SCARED I was when Alicia climbed on top of that piano! WHEW LAWD! One wrong move baby!!! But ALL of these women did EXCEPTIONALLY well! One of the best tributes ever.
