Dave Chappelle Weighs in on Rachel Dolezal.

Dave Chappelle Rachel Dolezal

While his sharp, and often biting commentary about race put Dave Chappelle on the map, the comedian recently revealed that he probably won’t be making many jokes about Rachel Dolezal, anytime soon.

Over the weekend, in the flurry of comments and jokes about Dolezal’s increasingly bizarre story, many made references to Chappelle’s Show. Despite it’s short run on Comedy Central from 2003-2006, the sketch comedy show continues to be the go-to reference when it comes to joking a bout race.

Chappelle, who recently delivered the commencement address at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts, took a moment to weigh in on where Dolezal might end up in the racial draft, referring to a popular sketch from his show.

According to the Washington Post,

“I think black,” Chappelle said Sunday, referring to the Spokane, Wash., NAACP president who last week was outed by her own parents as a white woman who had been masquerading as black for 10 years. “We would take her all day, right?”

He also went on to say,

“The world’s become ridiculous,” he told the awestruck grads at George Washington University’s Lisner auditorium. “There’s a white lady posing as a black lady. There is not one thing that woman accomplished that she couldn’t have done as a white woman. There’s no reason! She just needed the braids! I don’t know what she was doing.”

The comedian, who was surprisingly aloof when speaking of Dolezal, also stated that Dolezal’s story probably won’t be making it into his stand-up routines.

“I’m probably not going to do any jokes about her or any references to her for awhile ’cause that’s going to be a lot of comedians doing a lot. And I’m sure her rebuttal will be illuminating. Like, once she’s had time to process it and kind of get her wind back and get her message together.”
